English Blackburn College offers three major tracks: British and American literature, secondary teaching of English, and written communications. All majors begin their study of English by taking approximately the same courses, with many waiting until the end of their sophomore year before deciding on a major track.
The department’s literary magazine, which accepts entries from the campus community, is judged and produced by students in the Craft of Writing I course. The Annual Creative Writing Contest, held each Spring, provides substantial monetary prizes. English majors are often involved in theatrical projects. The department sponsors trips to lectures, readings and drama productions at area universities and professional theaters.
Majors British and American literature: The traditional liberal arts program in literature is suitable for the student who plans to continue in graduate or professional school or the student who enjoys the stimulation of literature and wishes to gain strong writing and speaking skills. A number of students considering law school or a career in management, publishing or communications choose this track. Secondary Teaching of English: This program is for the students who plan English as their primary teaching field after graduation. Juniors and seniors complete studies in literary research and critical theory. With the guidance of faculty, seniors write and present a seminar paper on an approved topic. Graduates are prepared to engage in a variety of research and writing endeavors, both literary and non-literary. Written Communications: Written Communications combines courses in writing, literature, and communication. The major is intended for students considering careers in journalism, publishing, and similar fields. |
Special Features There are many opportunities for interacting with faculty members, both in and out of class. The Special Topics course enables the department to offer unique courses exploring topics of interest to both majors and non-majors. The Advanced Studies in Literature course combines the study of a theme with readings in critical theory.
Majors often enroll in independent study projects which allow them to explore literary subjects of their own choosing. The craft of writing courses draw students from a variety of disciplines, and many students complete a minor in written communication. Testimonial
