1. Student-Faculty mentoring—The Blackburn College Work
Program places students with faculty in mentoring relationships.
2. Original research—Students routinely engage in original
research projects related to the diverse and broad interests of the
faculty. Faculty research projects are frequently co-authored by
students and professors and presented at national and international
scientific meetings.
3. Applying science to community problems—In recent years,
the chemistry department has engaged in several community service
projects exploring various aspects of water quality.
4. Investing educational technology into the classroom—The
faculty makes extraordinary efforts to apply the latest educational
technology, facilities permitting.
5. Extensive living collections—Extensive zoological
collections and botanical cultures, maintained by student workers,
allow living examples of biology to be integrated routinely into the
curriculum. Such collections in small schools are rare at best.
6. Intimate college community—With small science classes
taught exclusively by full-time science faculty with Ph.D.’s
students engage their science professors extensively (our science
student to science faculty is about 14:1).
7. Scientific meetings—Groups of up to eight undergraduate
students routinely accompany faculty to national and international
scientific meetings. Regularly, our students represent at least 50%
of the registered undergraduates attending a meeting.
8. Expanding communication skills—The Blackburn College
science faculty place a strong emphasis on scientific communication
in the classroom and in the active scientific community.
9. Laying a strong, academic foundation—The Blackburn science
faculty believe that an appreciation of the diversity of life at all
levels of biological organization provides the best foundation for
successful careers and graduate study in the life sciences.
10. A tradition of success—Nearly 20 years ago, a Great Lakes
Association study found that Blackburn College was in the top 0.5%
of U.S. colleges and universities in the percentage of science
graduates who went on to earn a Ph.D. Today, an unusually high
proportion of our graduates pursue graduate study, entering into
exclusive M.D., Ph.D., and D.P.T. (Doctorate of Physical Therapy)
programs. Currently, four members of the National Academy of
Sciences are Blackburn College alumni.
