Academics - Communications

Welcome

This program is designed to prepare students to succeed in both the academic study and professional application of the art of communication. Students are prepared for careers as professional communicators, graduate study in communication-related fields or (as is the case with many professional communicators) both. This program is designed to combine interdisciplinary insights from communications and other related fields in the humanities and social sciences, including art, anthropology, business administration, English, history, philosophy, physical education, political science, sociology and Spanish. Blackburn strives to create a dynamic, entrepreneurial culture. Blackburn Communications majors are encouraged to get involved in the ‘Burnian student newspaper, WBRN radio club, on-campus public relations and student life promotional activities. Hands-on, personal guidance is provided in order to enable students to become their own creators, producers and managers.

  Areas Of Emphasis

The professional communication track allows students to concentrate in areas of communication relevant to both professional and corporate contexts. From a professional perspective, students explore issues and learn skills related to public relations, journalism and advertising. From a corporate perspective, students explore issues and learn skills related to organizational and group communication.

The graphic communication track allows students to concentrate in the development of professional, visual-oriented artistic designs and text. This track emphasizes both the creation of computer-mediated designs and commercial photography. Students will also be introduced to the emergence of multimedia technologies and their applications to the Internet and other forms of computer mediated communications.

The intercultural communication track allows students to concentrate in the theoretical understanding and practical art of intercultural communication. By studying the context of intercultural exchanges through an intensive study of global history and literature, students develop both their intercultural understanding and its application in multicultural settings, especially in regards to the relationship between the English and Spanish speaking worlds.

The media studies track allows students to concentrate on the academic study of media and their relationship to society. Using a liberal arts perspective that integrates insights from both the humanities and social sciences, students will learn theories pertaining to communication technologies, their origins, structures and implications for our society.
