Blackburn Leadership
Blackburn College’s commitment to
building student character is evidenced in the routine of campus
life. Long recognized as one of America’s seven work colleges,
Blackburn students have always played an active role in the
operation of the college – every student participates in the
college’s Work Program. Because the Work Program is entirely student
managed, many students, when they graduate, leave with not only an
academic degree, but also the experience of staff scheduling and
training, job counseling and conflict resolution.
Now, as an academic
complement to the Work Program, Blackburn offers its students the
innovative Leadership Program which allows students to graduate with
the degree of their choice plus a Leadership Certificate. Intended
to develop practical leadership competencies as well as conceptual
understanding, the Leadership Program coursework focuses on the
development of these valuable and marketable skills: team building,
flexibility, constructive resolution of conflict, self-motivation
and positive regard for others.

The
Program
Whether a task is menial or managerial
this program encourages understanding of the ethical
dimensions of leadership and the meaning of each constituent
task for the whole. Through integrated programming, each
student enrolled in the Leadership Program is encouraged to
use their work experience as a living laboratory for the
development of skills that build leadership, cooperation and
responsibility.

For many years Blackburn students have known the benefit of the
work that they have done throughout their college years. Now
Blackburn has created a program that formalizes that experience
through the Leadership Program.
