Performing Arts
The performing arts students at Blackburn College engage in a program that combines a foundational education in music, theater and movement with an in-depth experience in either theater or music. At the lower division levels the performing arts students take a core set of courses that explore the basic theories of, and provide experience in, both theater and music, with a taste of movement/dance class. By their junior year, the students have chosen to focus on theater or music and take in-depth courses focused on their chosen discipline. A mysterious and generous gift to the College in the early 1960’s led to the creation of the Bothwell Conservatory! The classroom side of the building includes practice/rehearsal space along with the faculty and student offices. The auditorium side of Bothwell houses a 375 seat proscenium theater with a scene shop, greenroom/dressing rooms, hydraulically operated orchestra pit and state of the art lighting control.
Why Performing Arts? There are excellent academic-work linkages for performing arts students at Blackburn College. Students serve as costumers, stage managers, music assistants, set construction, tour coordinators, light/sound operators and performing arts public relations personnel, all as a regular part of the Work Program. 1. As a talented freshman, you could find yourself playing Lady Macbeth or other lead roles (an opportunity you won’t have until you are an upper classman at a big school). 2. You could have a Work Program position on a production crew, and instead of going to work, you’d be going to "play." 3. You’ll become a well-rounded artist. Almost all the performing arts students get involved in all the different aspect of theater production and music. 4. As a talented junior or senior you could find yourself in the director’s chair.

The Productions Blackburn College has a long tradition of creating high quality music and theater performances. The choir sings at a variety of functions throughout the year and engages in a concert at the end of each semester. One highlight of the "choir" experience is the spring choir tour, which may travel as far as New York.
A subset of the choir, the "Blackburn Voices," produces the annual Madrigal Dinner at the start of every Christmas season. This performance is a favorite of the local community and includes a generous offering of good food, light-hearted theatrics and high quality music. Theatrically speaking, Blackburn produces a straight play in the fall and (the crown jewel of Blackburn’s performing arts department) a musical theater production in the spring. Each fall there is a series of student-directed one acts and one student directed full-length play is produced each spring. Most years Blackburn Players produces a show and some student-written short plays are given staged readings at special dinners.
The Summer Repertory Theater at Blackburn College produces a large-scale musical every summer and students are encouraged to take part in those productions, both on and off stage.
