Blackburn receives grant from Energizer

Blackburn College continues to be one of the leaders in preparing students in the field of teacher education. Blackburn recently received a $12,500 grant from the Energizer Trust to support the partnership between the College’s Department of Education and the Brandon Homework Assistance Program in Springfield, Ill. Located in the Springfield Housing Authority’s Brandon Complex, the Brandon site provides tutoring services for local K-12 students, most of whom come from families and homes with low socio-economic status. As part of its curriculum, the Blackburn Education Department requires all of its students to successfully complete a “Diversity in Education” class. One day a week, Blackburn transports teacher candidates enrolled in the class to the center to tutor young students.

The grant will provide a laptop computer and projector, books and learning software, materials and supplies for the Brandon site and will help to offset transportation costs. [Education Dept. web pages]

Men Win Tournament

The Blackburn College men’s basketball team opened the 2006-07 season with two victories, beating Dominican University and Concordia University–Chicago at home in North-South Basketball Classic play November 17-18. With the two wins, Blackburn captured the North-South tournament title for the second time in three seasons. The Beavers also won the tournament, an annual event that features Blackburn and Greenville College from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) as well as Dominican and Concordia from the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC), in 2004.
