Melba Patillo Beals, Little Rock Nine member,
speaks to Blackburn community |
On September 25, 1957, nine courageous teens
entered the doors of Little Rock Central High in search of a quality education.
Melba Pattillo Beals and eight other black teens endured name-calling, death
threats, and physical abuse, as they worked to integrate Arkansas schools. Fifty
years after the Little Rock Nine breached the educational color line, Beals
brought her generous spirit and heart-wrenching story to Blackburn College.

Carlinville Wal-Mart supports Blackburn with grant
|
|
On Monday, October 22, Blackburn College
received a $5,000 grant from Wal-Mart. This grant - and others presented to
local educational and civic groups - was awarded in celebration of the grand
opening of the new Super Wal-Mart on Shipman Road in Carlinville. The grant
funds will be used to equip labs in the new science building with video
microscopes.

Alumni honored during homecoming banquet
|
|
Several Blackburn alumni received top honors and
awards during the 2007 Blackburn homecoming weekend.
Barbara Oakes '69 received the "Service to Humanity" award for her volunteer
efforts in support of the Heifer Project.
Dr. James Florini '53 received the "Distinguished Alumni Award" for his
outstanding career and contributions to science.
Lee Brown '55 and Dick Holm '57 were both named to the Blackburn Athletic
Hall of Fame for their achievements as athletes during their years at Blackburn.
Additionally, Blackburn Performing Arts Professor
Richard Young was honored by the Alumni Board with the Gideon Blackburn
Award for his service to the Blackburn community. Photos and details of awards

'55 Scholarship fund established
|

President Mim Pride accepts scholarship check from
Carol (Baumgartner) and Dick Darling. |
During its 50th reunion in 2005, the class of
1955 voted to undertake a fundraising effort to establish a Class of 1955
Scholarship Fund at Blackburn College. This project became a true labor of love
for Dick and Carol (Baumgartner) Darling, of Bloomington, IN. On behalf of their
class and other classes that joined the effort, the couple presented Blackburn
President Mim Pride with a check for $25,791. The class gift means that students
for generations to come will receive financial help for their Blackburn
education.

Madrigal tickets on sale

Tickets for the annual Madrigal Dinner
celebration are now on sale. The event will take place on Nov. 16 and 17 in the
Demuzio Campus Center. Tickets are priced at $25 for general admission, $20 per
person for groups of 8 or more, and $10 for children 12 and younger. You may
purchase tickets by contacting the
