Traveling Russian Exhibit on Display at
Blackburn College
An
exhibit tour of Russian treasures and highlights of
Russian-American relations since 1698 is on display at Blackburn
College’s visual arts center gallery until November 21. The
gallery will be open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00
p.m. and Sunday’s from 12:00 – 2:30 p.m. Admission to see the
exhibit is free.
The Blackburn stop was made possible by Mr. Lloyd Costley, a
native of Carlinville and author of the Best of Russia tour.
Costley currently serves as the Chairman of the Friends of the
Russian Culture Centre in Washington, D.C. The tour coincides
with the 200th anniversary of Russian – American diplomatic
relations which began in 1807.
The objects making up The Best of Russia exhibit reflect many
prominent aspects of Russian culture throughout history. The
showing also illustrates the positive spirit of Russia-U.S.
relations – from 18th century trade to the alliance in World War
II and joint endeavors in space. Viewers of the portrait of
Catherine the Great, who was one of the leading cultural figures
in Russian history, will learn that she played an important role
on behalf of the American colonies in the War of Independence
and that American naval hero John Paul Jones returned the favor
by helping defeat her enemies at sea. Pieces in this elaborate
show include portraits of Peter the Great and Catherine the
Great, scaled models of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, Archangel
Cathedral, St. Basil’s, Annunciation Cathedral, the Palace of
Facets and the Eternal Ballet.
The exhibit is normally housed in the Russian Cultural Centre in
Washington. The Centre is an agency of the Russian Government
and was opened in 1999, pursuant to a Bilateral Agreement signed
by the Governments of Russia and the United States, at the end
of the Cold War.
