Blackburn Men's Soccer has Favorable 2008 Schedule

The Blackburn College men’s soccer team will have a favorable schedule to highlight the 2008 season as the Beavers look to move into the upper division of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Beavers will have eight home games to mark a slate that features an intriguing exhibition game at the University of Illinois - Springfield on at 7 p.m. on August 27. That game features the return of second-year Blackburn head coach Aydin Gonulsen to the site of the greatest achievements in a legendary collegiate coaching career.

Gonulsen came out of retirement to take over the Blackburn program after spending a quarter-century as head men’s soccer coach at UIS. While there, Gonulsen racked up 416 wins and NAIA national titles in 1986, 1988, and 1993 during an NAIA Hall of Fame career. In 2007, Gonulsen led Blackburn to a 7-9 record.

The Beavers will then open the regular season with a home game against MacMurray on Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. Blackburn has not lost to MacMurray since the 2000 season and is 12-0-1 against the Highlanders in that span.

Other home games for Blackburn include Robert Morris of Springfield (Sept. 7, 5 p.m.), Fontbonne (Sept. 16, 2 p.m.), Webster (Sept. 20, 2 p.m.), Eureka (Sept. 24, 2 p.m.), and Principia (Sept. 30, 4 p.m.).

Blackburn then hosts Lincoln Christian at 4 p.m. on Oct. 2 before closing the home schedule against Maryville on Oct. 25 at 3 p.m.

The UIS “friendly” will be the first of two trips to Springfield for Gonulsen, who will also be back in the Capital City as the Beavers play at Robert Morris on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the regular-season finale.
