Blackburn Women Continue Winning Ways
The Blackburn College Women's Basketball team won for the sixth consecutive time on Saturday with a 63-50 home court victory over Principia College. Kariann Hill scored 19 points and Jasmine Robinson added 16 to lift the Beavers over the 500 mark for the 1st time this season at 11-10. Blackburn is now 9-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Blackburn led 32-20 at halftime and never really put the game away but Principia was still only able to narrow the lead to six in the second half. For the game Blackburn shot 41 percent on 26 of 64 shooting while Principia was 20 of 55 for 36 percent. The Beavers committed just 13 turnovers while forcing 20 Panther turnovers. For the Panthers, they were led in scoring by Lindsay Sydness with 23 points, Sydness leads the SLIAC in scoring.
Blackburn is now off for one week before heading to St. Louis for a conference showdown with Fontbonne University on February 13. Fontbonne is currently just one game ahead of the Beavers in the SLIAC standings.
Strong 2nd Half Propels Men's Basketball to Victory
The Blackburn College Men's Basketball Team rallied from a 34-27 halftime deficit to defeat Principia College 66-60 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Carlinville. Rod Sykes led the way with 22 points while three others joined Sykes in double figures. Dakota Tucker scored 12 points and Cobri Gilbert and James Gowin added 11 each for Blackburn which is now 4-15 overall and 2-10 in the SLIAC.
The Beavers trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half and finally took their 1st lead of the game at the 9:12 mark at 49-48. There were four lead changes after that before Blackburn took the lead for good at the 3:32 mark. Blackburn shot 33 percent on the afternoon on 22 of 67 shooting and Principia was 24 of 74 for 32 percent. Blackburn was 19 of 23 from the foul line for 83 percent which was the key statistic down the stretch as the Beavers made their last ten free throw attempts.
The Beavers will return to action in a non-conference game on Tuesday night in St. Louis where they will take on Harris-Stowe State University at 7:00 p.m.
