Blackburn College Business Department Program

BUSINESS CORE AREA
The business core area consists of 30-31 hours of work which are common to all major areas of study in business. The student must complete all of the following courses.

EC 200  Macroeconomics
EC 202  Microeconomics
EC 242 Statistical Analysis
MA 120 or  Liberal Arts Math
MA 140+  Pre-Calculus
(MA 140+ is strongly recommended for CPA or graduate school candidates)
BA 211  Financial Accounting
BA 212  Managerial Accounting
BA 310  Organizational Behavior
BA 311  Introduction to Marketing

Plus 2 Courses from the following:
BA 307, 308, 321, 330, 360, 403, 405, EC 319, or PY 295


ACCOUNTING MAJOR
Accounting systems are required in all organizations that accumulate and dispose of resources. A body of principles concerning classification and interpretation of financial data has developed requiring specialized skills and knowledge. An accounting student must comprehend this knowledge and implement skills in order to successfully function in our complex business world. A major in Accounting will prepare you for entry into the field of industrial, institutional, or public accounting

Currently, 150 college semester hours are required to be eligible to take the CPA examination in the state of Illinois. With careful planning, you can earn a B.A. at Blackburn and gain admission to a graduate school to pursue a Master’s degree. This will allow you to earn the required hours to be eligible to sit for the CPA exam.

As an alternative, earning a B.A. at Blackburn in Accounting will allow you to work in the private industry sector. After gaining two years of work experience, if desired, you would be eligible to take the CMA exam to be certified as a Certified Management Accountant.

The courses selected for the major acquaint the student with the principles, procedure, and profession. Students majoring in accounting are required to complete the following courses:

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT MAJOR

The management function pervades all facets of the business organization. Production management studies the manufacturing process where many new quantitative techniques are applied. Personnel management involves the study of the human factor in business organizations. Students who select this major are preparing themselves for positions in firms regardless of size or organizational structure. There has been a continuing demand for graduates who have studied management.

MARKETING MANAGEMENT MAJOR

Marketing encompasses the functions of creating and satisfying the demands of consumers. It is a study of the organizations and systems involved in the rendering of personal services to the consumer and the physical distribution of goods from the producer to the consumer. The marketing major will discover career opportunities in the field of sales management, advertising, marketing, retailing, product management, and physical distribution.
