Job Interview Tips

Once you are successful at landing an interview, it is time to really "shine!" While the Office if Career Services has many resources available to help you prepare for a job interview, we suggest you look at these videos as a starter.

Additionally, take a look at the tips below:

  1. Dress for success! It is better to over dress then to "under" dress. For men this usually means a suit with a collared shirt and tie ( at a minimum a sport coat, slacks, shirt and tie). For women, also a conservative suit (either a skirt or slacks) and a pastel blouse.
  2. Go easy on jewelry, cologne, and make-up.
  3. Conservative black shoes ( low heels for women) are considered best.
  4. Be prepared for typical interview questions. You can find some here:
    http://jobsearch.about.com/od/interviewquestionsanswers/a/interviewquest.htm.
  5. Practice your responses to typical questions BEFORE you go to the interview.
  6. Always arrive at least 15 minutes early for an interview--never late! Be prepared to wait.
  7. Be respectful and polite to everyone you meet in the company where you are interviewing. Consider everyone as a member of the interview team.
  8. Take an extra copy of your resume and cover letter and any other materials you may need in a small binder or portfolio.
  9. Leave you cell phone, cigarettes, chewing gum, etc. in your car!
  10. Posture and eye contact is important. Stand and offer a firm handshake when you meet your interviewers. Sit up straight, keep your hands from fidgeting and look the interviewer in the eyes when answering a question. Provide a complete but brief answer to questions.

These are just a few tips to help make you interview a success. Be sure to check with the Office of Career Services for more help.
