Programs and Mission
The Department of Chemistry and Physics at Blackburn offers four strong majors: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, and Chemistry for Pre-Med and Other Health Professions. For more information on these majors please see our catalog link.
The basic Chemistry major gives a solid background in General, Organic, Analytical, and Physical Chemistry, preparing the student for jobs in industry, government, and research. Many of Blackburn’s graduates go on to earn Master’s or Ph.D. degrees, while others find good jobs immediately upon graduation.
The Biochemistry and Environmental Chemistry majors include a fair amount of Biology necessary to succeed in those fields. The Chemistry for Pre-med and Other Health Professions Track provides students with the courses needed to enter and succeed in medical, dental, and other professional schools, while at the same time allowing the student to pursue a career in chemistry.
The mission of the department is to provide effective educational experiences that prepare Blackburn graduates for successful careers in their discipline and to continue learning in their field of concentration. This includes preparing them for graduate study. The Blackburn curriculum leads to the development of innate abilities and convictions in students concerning their major fields of concentration. The department supports the college’s emphasis on effective writing, speaking and critical thinking.
