David Valleau Curtis

Dr. Curtis began his teaching career at Blackburn in 2004, after teaching full time for six years at Medaille College in Buffalo, NY. At Medaille, he was professor of communications, the faculty advisor for the student newspaper, and an active member in the development of the general education and honors programs.

In addition to his teaching and curriculum development responsibilities, from 1996-2006 he has participated in national conferences and published a number of articles on popular culture and the influence of media technology upon society.

Most recently, his 2006 article “South Park and the Open Society: Defending Democracy Through Satire” with co-author Gerald Erion has been accepted as a chapter for the book “South Park and Philosophy” which will be appearing in local bookstores within the next year. His 2006 article “Mapping and Mining the Global Frontier: Evolving E-Commerce Profiling and Denmark’s Netminers” with co-author Christian Vermehlen has been accepted for the 2006 Direct Marketing Educational Foundation. The article will be presented at the DMA’s annual conference in San Francisco, Oct. 16-19 and published in its entirety on its online proceedings. In addition, in 2006 Dr. Curtis completed a full-length draft on a book called “The Priest and the Prophet: Ong, McLuhan, and the Mysteries of Media” for which he is looking for a publisher.

Dr. Curtis finished his doctorate in 1997 on the culture impact of new media and the Internet, completed a masters in business management in 1992, and received his bachelors in liberal studies in 1990.

Before teaching full time at Medaille, Dr. Curtis taught at Florida Gulf Coast University, Barry University at Fort Myers, Texas A&M University, and Penn State University.

He is currently the advisor for the student newspaper, the ‘Burnian, and the radio club, and is continuously working on developing links between communications activities and Blackburn’s work program.
