Dr. Curtis began his teaching career at Blackburn in 2004,
after teaching full time for six years at Medaille College
in Buffalo, NY. At Medaille, he was professor of
communications, the faculty advisor for the student
newspaper, and an active member in the development of the
general education and honors programs.
In addition to his teaching and curriculum development
responsibilities, from 1996-2006 he has participated in
national conferences and published a number of articles on
popular culture and the influence of media technology upon
society.
Most recently, his 2006 article “South Park and the Open
Society: Defending Democracy Through Satire” with co-author
Gerald Erion has been accepted as a chapter for the book
“South Park and Philosophy” which will be appearing in local
bookstores within the next year. His 2006 article “Mapping
and Mining the Global Frontier: Evolving E-Commerce
Profiling and Denmark’s Netminers” with co-author Christian
Vermehlen has been accepted for the 2006 Direct Marketing
Educational Foundation. The article will be presented at the
DMA’s annual conference in San Francisco, Oct. 16-19 and
published in its entirety on its online proceedings. In
addition, in 2006 Dr. Curtis completed a full-length draft
on a book called “The Priest and the Prophet: Ong, McLuhan,
and the Mysteries of Media” for which he is looking for a
publisher.
Dr. Curtis finished his doctorate in 1997 on the culture
impact of new media and the Internet, completed a masters in
business management in 1992, and received his bachelors in
liberal studies in 1990.
Before teaching full time at Medaille, Dr. Curtis taught at
Florida Gulf Coast University, Barry University at Fort
Myers, Texas A&M University, and Penn State University.
He is currently the advisor for the student newspaper, the
‘Burnian, and the radio club, and is continuously working on
developing links between communications activities and
Blackburn’s work program.
