Requirements for a Major in British and American Literature
EN 161, 203, 204, 223, 224, 234, 305, 306, 324, 390, 410, 429, 430, 448 and 498.
TOTAL: 45 semester hours

Requirements for a Secondary English Education Major
EN 161, 203, 223, 204 or 224 or 234, 305, 306, 324, 338, 390, 410 or 430, 429, 498; CO 213 or 221 and PA 212 or 290 (1 or 2 hours); CO 240, 361, 363, 368; ED 100, 200, 220, 310, 315, 316, 320, 370, 400, 410, 491, 492.
TOTAL: 48-50 semester hours plus 44 semester hours of professional education courses required for certification.
If middle school endorsement is desired, candidate must complete PY 227 and ED 205.

English majors are required for graduation to earn a grade of at least a C in all courses required for the major.

Requirements for a Minor in British and American Literature
EN 161, 203, 204 or 224, 305, 306, 324; one course selected from EN 200, 223, 234, 410, 430, 448.
TOTAL: 21 semester hours

Requirements for a Minor in Written Communication
EN 252, 338, 352; CO 205, 240; two literature courses at or above the 200 level OR one literature course at the 200 level and CO 217.

Courses
140. Introduction to Literature (3 hours)
Each Semester
Interpretative and critical reading in various genres, including fiction, poetry, and drama. (IAI: H3 900) Prerequisite: no senior standing.

161. Introduction to Literary Analysis (3 hours)
First Semester
An introductory course in literary genres and analysis, intended for students considering an English major or minor (other students admitted only upon approval of department chair.)

200. Special Topics in Literature (3 hours)
As Needed
A reading and discussion course featuring selected topics. May be repeated once for credit with different topic. Intended primarily for non-majors, the course can be taken by majors and minors for elective credit. Prerequisite: EN 140, 161, or consent of the instructor.

203. Survey of British Literature I (3 hours)
First Semester
Chronological survey of British literature and cultures, from Beowulf to the mid-17th century. (IAI: H3 912)

204. Survey of British Literature II (3 hours)
Second Semester, alternate years. Offered 2006-2007.
Chronological survey of British literature and cultures of the Romantics and Victorians (late 18th century to 1900 from the 18th century to 1900). (IAI: H3 913)

223. World Literary Masterpieces I (3 hours)
Second Semester, alternate years. Offered 2006-2007.
Representative Continental works in English translation from the time of the ancient Greeks and Hebrews through the Renaissance. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or consent of instructor. (IAI: H3 906)

224. World Literary Masterpieces II (3 hours)
Second Semester, alternate years. Offered 2007-2008.
Representative Continental works in English translation from the age of Reason to the Twentieth Century. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or consent of instructor. (IAI: H3 907)

234. Contemporary Voices (3 hours)
Second Semester
Study of literature written by American writers since 1960. Includes poetry, fiction, drama, essay. Non-majors encouraged to enroll. Prerequisites: EN 140, 161, or consent of the instructor.

252. The Craft of Writing I (3 hours)
First Semester, alternate years. Offered 2007-2008.
Workshop in the writing of fiction, poetry, drama. Techniques involved in the creation of theme, plot, character, setting, irony, and symbol will be discussed with appropriate readings assigned. Literary magazine production.

300. Internship (1-12 hours)
Each Semester
Working and learning experiences off campus. Each student’s program is developed according to established College guidelines under the sponsorship of a faculty member. See the index under “Internships” for additional information, or consult the department chair. Prerequisite: Junior standing or above. Not open to any student who is on academic, disciplinary, or Work Program probation.

305. American Literature I (3 hours)
First Semester
Study of American literature from the Colonial period to the end of the nineteenth century, with emphasis on major writers and movements. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing, EN 140 or 161.

306. American Literature II (3 hours)
Second Semester
Study of American literature, with emphasis on major American writers and movements from the late 19th century to the 1960’s. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing, EN 140 or 161.

310. Twentieth Century British Literature (3 hours)
Either Semester, alternate years. Offered 2007-2008.
Joyce, Yeats, Woolf, and selected writers of poetry, fiction, and drama. Course will include study of social and cultural trends. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing, EN 140 or 161.

324. Shakespeare (3 hours)
Second Semester
Introduction to Shakespeare: a study of comedy, tragedy, romance, and history; overview of Renaissance staging. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing, EN 140 or 161. (IAI: H3 905)

338. The Nature of Language (3 hours)
Second Semester, alternate years. Offered 2006-2007.
A beginning study of the development and nature of language, with the English language used as a model. The grammar and semantics of language in relation to human communication. Prerequisites: Junior standing, PY 101.

352. The Craft of Writing II (3 hours)
First Semester, alternate years. Offered 2006-2007.
Emphasis on genres and techniques in writing poetry, fiction, and drama. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

390. Literary Research (3 hours)
First Semester
Instruction in advanced literary research and research writing is combined with practice in applying historical and critical approaches to selected literary works. Must be completed prior to enrollment in EN 498, Senior Seminar. Prerequisite: Junior Standing. Open only to English majors.

429. Theory and Criticism of Literature (3 hours)
Second Semester, alternate years. Offered 2006-2007.
Works and ideas of representative modern and post modern literary theorists and critics, with attention to earlier contributions toward modern views. Must be completed prior to enrollment in EN 498, Senior Seminar. Prerequisite: Junior English majors; EN 390 or consent of the instructor.

430. Advanced Studies in Literature (3 hours)
Either Semester, as needed.
An intensive course in selected literary topics and writers. Student preferences will be considered in the selection of the topics. English majors are required to do extra work, such as a critical paper, oral report, or additional reading in primary and secondary sources. Prerequisites: Junior standing and EN 161.

448. The Novel (3 hours)
Either semester, as needed. Offered 2006-2007.
An examination of major American/British novels with correlated readings and criticism. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing, EN 161.

498. English Seminar (3 hours)
Each Semester. (Fall enrollment is limited to Secondary English Education majors.)
Independent investigation of selected writers, works, and literary problems. A substantial research paper will be required of each student. Most students enroll in this course in their last semester of college work. Earlier enrollment with departmental consent. Prerequisite: Junior Standing, EN 429. Open only to English majors.

499. Independent Study (1-3 hours)
Each Semester
Individual projects in British, American, and comparative literatures; in the production of original literary manuscripts; or in the study of the English language. In cooperation with the supervising instructor, the student will devise and carry out an advanced project. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisites: Junior standing and consent of the department chair.
