Professional Scholarship

I am a charter member of the Shakespeare Fellowship and an active member of the Shakespeare Oxford Society, international groups centered on the Shakespeare authorship question. Yes, I believe that someone other than Will Shaksper of Stratford wrote all those magnificent plays and poems! Most likely, the writer was Edward deVere, the 17th Earl of Oxford and a member of Queen Elizabeth’s inner circle. As an Oxfordian, I have written a number of articles and have spoken many times about his life and about the plays; I am on the editorial board of a scholarly journal called THE OXFORDIAN.

This year, I attended two conferences devoted to the Shakespeare authorship question. In October, I traveled to Carmel, CA and chaired a panel which critiqued performances of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Macbeth." In April, at Concordia University in Portland, OR, I spoke about Shakespeare's bloody revenge tragedy, "Titus Andonicus."

I am currently completing an edition of "Othello," a task that would have been impossible without the help of three gifted Blackburn students:
Jillian Stambaugh, Marie Sutterfield, and Emily Johnston.

Contemporary British writers also fascinate me; I am a charter member of the Sylvia Townsend Warner Society and have written an article for the newsletter. I travel to England each year, and this June will be interviewing novelist Isabel Colegate ("The Shooting Party" is probably her best known book). For Fall semester 2008, I shall be on sabbatical, primarilyworking on British women authors (sometimes on campus and sometimes traveling).

College Service

Twelve years ago, I created the Blackburn British Study program, and I continue to serve as its director.  This work involves selection of students for the spring semester each year at the University of
Swansea, Wales.

Committee Work at Blackburn:  ,Chair of the Mueller Summer Fellowship Committee; service on Committee on Academic Standing, Faculty Tenure, and Faculty Relations; and advising the Work Program appeals Board.
For spring 2008, I assisted in the Program Review for the Blackburn
