Medical Technology
Welcome
The B.A. degree in Medical Technology at Blackburn is a demanding program that draws heavily on the College’s excellent Biology and Chemistry Departments. As a Medical Technology student, you will spend your first three years at Blackburn where, in addition to general college requirements, you will take courses in Human Anatomy and Physiology; Zoology; Microbiology and Immunology; Cell Biology (or Genetic); Chemistry, both organic and inorganic; and College Algebra. Courses in Biochemistry, Computer Science, Statistics, and Physics are also strongly recommended.
During your junior year, you will apply to one of our affiliated or approved hospital programs for your fourth and final clinical year. Our current affiliations include St. John’s Hospital in Springfield and St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Our students also have the opportunity to apply to the Medical Technology program at Barnes- Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, as well as some other non-affiliated hospital programs. Acceptance into a clinical program will generally require a 2.75 minimal grade point average.
Each of our affiliates is fully accredited through the American Medical Association. They provide a quality program utilizing the most modern equipment available in well- staffed laboratories. Once enrolled in a hospital program, you will be attending lectures in clinical laboratory studies and participating in over 1,000 hours of clinical rotation. By the time you have finished your final year, you will have textbook and/ or practical knowledge in Pathology, Immunohematology, Serology, Immunology, Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, and Hematology. You will also have first hand experience of the working life of a Medical Technologist.
