Physical Education
MISSION & PROGRAMS
The Physical Education department at Blackburn offers two exciting majors: Physical Education with K-12 Certification and Physical Education (Sport Management
Track). For more information on these majors please see our catalog link.
The mission of the department is to provide effective educational experiences that prepare our graduates for successful careers in their discipline and to continue learning in their field of concentration. This includes preparing them for graduate study. The Blackburn curriculum leads to the development of innate abilities and convictions in
students concerning their major fields of concentration. The department supports the college’s emphasis on effective writing, speaking and critical thinking.
Our faculty are dedicated to developing the students’ proficiency in communication, moral reasoning, and professionalism. We are strongly committed to working with students in support of their professional development. The learning environment is
nurturing, caring, and challenging. Students in the K-12 Certification program will experience a progression of learning opportunities which include teaching small
groups of their peers, overseeing a larger groups of peers, working with small children, and finally student teaching.
The culminating educational experience for students majoring in sport management is a one-semester or summer internship at a sport-related agency such as professional sports teams, health clubs, YMCA/YWCA’s, sport arenas, commercial recreation facilities, Special Olympics, and Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs. All students will learn to interrelate and communicate concepts of physical education and sport management. This will include the ability to critically analyze and conduct qualitative and quantitative research culminating in the Senior Seminar presentation.
