During my college search, I wanted to attend a small, private liberal arts school that was affordable. Blackburn is the perfect fit for me.

Blackburn’s psychology program is designed to provide a solid general background in this dynamic young science. As a Blackburn student, you can receive preparation in a variety of areas including psychological testing, statistics, experimental research methodology, counseling, industrial and organizational dynamics and child, adolescent and adult psychology. The wide range of subject matter included in the discipline makes the psychology major vital, either as a single major or in combination with another major or minor.
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in psychology will prepare you for a career in counseling in such areas as educational and vocational guidance, family and marital counseling, drug and alcohol abuse and psychological assessment. Public opinion research, marketing, advertising and designing or evaluating social service programs are a few possibilities for those interested in applied psychology. Management, human resource management and marketing are some examples of careers in the business world for which the study of psychology provides good preparation.
Of special interest to many majors are the abundant opportunities to apply in practical settings the knowledge they have gained in the classroom. For example, you may apply to be Blackburn’s resident directors and/or resident assistants under the Work Program. Resident directors have the primary responsibility for the overall management of the residence halls. Resident assistants work with residents to plan activities, provide support on personal and social matters and assist the resident director with various aspects of life within the residence hall community. In addition, you may simultaneously earn academic credit and gain valuable work experience with a practicum in psychology or interning with a business or professional organizations.
