Public Administration

Because of the small class sizes professors get a sense of who each student is. Not only are the programs great, the teachers are very involved and caring. They make an effort so all students can succeed. quote

Public administration majors develop leadership skills through both the study and practice of leadership. Many courses in the major include simulations and role-play exercises that give you hands-on experience analyzing policy problems and negotiating solutions while you read and study the theory behind the exercises. In addition to the experiential learning methods, you will have the opportunity to solve real life problems on a daily basis by assuming leadership responsibilities in the student-managed Work Program. You are encouraged to write about these experiences and learn from them in the leadership classes. This combination of theory and practice is an excellent preparation for public service.

Career Opportunities

Public administration is one of the fastest growing fields in political science. Career fields include city management, policy analysis, public affairs reporting, information processing, research, political consulting, social services and administration in the public, nonprofit and private sectors. In addition to employment directly after college, public administration graduates have been successful in law school and in graduate programs in public administration, public policy, political science and business administration.

The Program

The public administration major is an interdisciplinary program designed to develop the analytical, negotiation and leadership skills needed to work effectively in the public sector.

Blackburn’s unique integration of academic, work and social life provides you with many opportunities to develop the interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills that are associated with career success.
