SPANISH
2005-2006 Faculty: Dr. Buxbaum

A student may enroll in any course commensurate with the student’s achievement as determined by a proficiency examination or previous enrollment in college-level Spanish. All incoming students (freshmen and transfer students) who wish to forgo prerequisites and enter the program at a more advanced level are required to take the placement examination, if they have not already taken the Spanish Advanced Placement Examination.

Requirements for a Spanish Major
23 semester hours of Spanish language and literature beyond SP 202, including a minimum of 9 semester hours in Spanish literature and/or Spanish American literature. Spanish majors must complete at least one semester of study in Mexico in the Blackburn Mexico Semester program, must also keep a journal of their experiences based on a book assigned by the Director, and they must also produce, either in their last literature course or an independent study, a substantial analytical research paper.

Requirements for a Spanish and Latin American Studies Major
23 semester hours of Spanish language and literature at the 300 level or above, including SP 315 or 321, SP 498 (with Latin American topic), and at least 3 more hours of literature in Spanish; 12 hours of courses in Latin American history chosen from the following: HI 221, HI 222, HI 342, HI 353. Spanish/Latin American Studies majors must complete at least one semester of study in Mexico in the Blackburn Mexico Semester program.

Requirements for a Spanish Minor
12 credit hours at 300 level or above, with a minimum of three hours of conversation, three of advanced composition, and three of literature.

Courses
101. Elementary Spanish (4 hours)
First Semester
Fundamentals of Spanish including pronunciation, grammar, conversation, writing, and reading. Required practice with audio tapes and in small-group drill sessions.

102. Elementary Spanish (4 hours)
Second Semester
A continuation of Spanish 101. Prerequisite: SP 101, consent of instructor, or proficiency placement.

201. Intermediate Spanish (3 hours)
First Semester
Review of the fundamentals of Spanish grammar, with emphasis on expanding skills in composition, conversation, and reading. Prerequisite: SP 102, consent of the instructor, or proficiency placement.

202. Intermediate Spanish (3 hours)
Second Semester
A continuation of Spanish 201. Prerequisite: SP 201,consent of instructor, or proficiency placement. (IAI: H1 900)

300. Internship (1-12 hours)
Each Semester
Working and learning experiences off campus. Each student’s program is developed according to college guidelines under the sponsorship of a faculty member. Consult the department chair. Prerequisite: Junior standing or above. Not open to any student who is on academic, social, or Work Probation.

301. Advanced Spanish Conversation (3-6 hours)
First Semester, as needed.
Review and expansion of grammatical skills contextualized by everyday conversational situations and specialized, interdisciplinary vocabulary. Includes a strong component of cross-cultural perspectives as they relate to linguistic and cultural contexts. Prerequisite: SP 202 or consent of instructor.

311. Advanced Spanish Composition (3-6 hours)
Second Semester, as needed.
Review and expansion of grammatical skills and vocabulary needed to write in Spanish using a variety of functions, including creative description, narration in the past, exposition, and argumentation. Through a variety of readings, students will also gain an understanding of cultural and political issues as they relate to various Hispanic populations. Prerequisite: SP 301 or consent of the instructor.

315. Latin American Cultural Identity: Fiction, Poetry, and Essay (3 hours)
Second Semester, alternate years. Offered 2007-2008.
An exploration of Latin American cultural identity through the short fiction, poetry, and essays of major twentieth century writers. Prerequisite: SP 301 or consent of instructor.

321. Visions of the U.S. in Hispanic Literature, Media, and Music (3 hours)
First Semester, as needed.
Interdisciplinary course that compares visions of the U.S. in Hispanic and North American cultural products.
Prerequisite: SP 202 or consent of instructor.

398. Special Topics: Introduction to Literature in Spanish (3 hours)
First Semester, alternate years. Offered 2007-2008.
An introduction to the literature of Spain and Latin America for students who have completed Intermediate Spanish. Prerequisite: SP 202.

401. Advanced Spanish Conversation (3-6 hours)
As Needed
Review and expansion of grammatical and conversational skills contextualized by specialized interdisciplinary and/or professional situations. Significant cross-cultural component. Prerequisite: SP 301 or consent of instructor.

413. Survey of Spanish American Literature (3 hours)
First Semester, as needed.
Survey of Spanish American Literature from the Pre-Columbian period to 1950. Prerequisite: SP 301 or consent of instructor.

414. Survey of Spanish American Literature (3 hours)
Second Semester, as needed.
Survey of Spanish American literature from 1950 to the present. Prerequisite: SP 301 or consent of instructor.

416. Survey of Spanish Literature to 1700 (3 hours)
As Needed
Survey of the literature of Spain from the Middle Ages to the end of the Golden Age. Prerequisite: SP 301 or consent of instructor.

417. Survey of Spanish Literature, 19th and 20th Centuries (3 hours)
As Needed
Survey of the literature of Spain from romanticism to the contemporary period. Prerequisite: SP 301 or consent of instructor.

498. Topics in Spanish and Latin American Literature (2-3 hours)
As Needed
In depth study of a particular author, genre, or period. May be repeated for credit when the topic changes. Prerequisite: Senior standing.

499. Independent Studies (1-3 hours)
Each Semester
Readings and conferences in a specific area of Hispanic literature. Prerequisites: One course in Hispanic literature and consent of the instructor.
