“I chose Blackburn mainly for the Work Program. I completely
believe that the Work Program allows us to enhance our education,
gain invaluable job and leadership experience, and stand out in the
job market after graduation.”
“I enjoy the equality of the college. Some of my favorite
experiences have come from being part of committees with faculty,
staff, and administration members and being able to voice my opinion
and be taken seriously. I know that my friends at other schools
don’t have opportunities like this—most of them don’t even know who
the school President is, let alone have the opportunity to eat
dessert with him/her once a month!”
“I hope to gain a better understanding of group dynamics and how to
motivate people as a General Manager this year. I also want to make
a conscious effort to emphasize the idea that work can be fun and
productive at the same time.”

“I chose Blackburn because I wanted a small campus where I
would have the chance to know my professors on a personal level
rather than just being a number to them. “
“I enjoy the fact that I am able to know and see nearly all of the
student body. I want to continue to keep the Work Program a success
and learning experience for everyone who attends Blackburn now and
in the future. I also want to be someone who can help out the
student body with any questions or needs that they may have. “

The Variety of Work Departments
Student workers are involved in all the work
necessary to the day-to-day operations of the college, and some students are
involved in community service jobs with non-profit organizations in the
Carlinville community. Your job may be to help prepare or serve food,
clean the residence halls, mow the grounds or perform carpentry, utilities
or other skilled maintenance tasks. You may be needed in the Admissions
Office to conduct a campus tour or perform clerical work. Perhaps there is a
need for someone with retail experience in the Bookstore. You might have
computer experience that helps meet a need in the Computer Lab or an
Administrative Office. The Public Relations office might need someone with
photography or editing skills to help with the yearbook or campus newspaper.
Students perform a variety of services, all of which are important to the
day-to-day operation of the college. A host of other jobs exist in the areas
of Academic and Athletic services, as well as Campus Community & Safety, Community
Service, and the Library.
Listed below are links to descriptions of the various work departments and
the student jobs within each. There are a variety of jobs. Some jobs may
relate to a course of academic study or career path, and others may not.
Regardless, all are important to the college community and all can provide
opportunities for learning and growth of benefit to you. You will learn to
manage your time, to be responsible and accountable, to solve problems, and
to work with others as a team. You will also have the opportunity to be a
contributing member of a community and to make some lifelong friendships,
while helping to reduce the cost of your education.
